Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital and the Tenet Healthcare Foundation supported the American Cancer Society’s 2008 Cy-Fair Relay for Life event that was held April 25 and 26 at Cypress Woods High School. The annual fundraiser event is a community-wide, survivors' celebration and relay-style walk that benefits cancer research, education and patient services.

One of the evening's highlights is the Luminaria Ceremony. The night is brightened by the glow of lighted bags called luminarias, each honoring someone who has battled cancer or has been lost to the disease.

According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, there were an estimated 37,030 cancer-related deaths in Texas last year. Routine screenings by a physician may prevent some cancers, including cervical cancer, breast and colorectal cancer, and early detection of cancers through these screenings can be the key.
