Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital will host a free Basics of Sleep webinar on Tuesday, March 4 at 7 p.m. Attendees will learn about the importance of sleep, the sleep cycle, stages of sleep, consequences of sleep deprivation, common circadian disruptions, and the symptoms and treatment of sleep disorders. The webinar will be hosted by Dileep Puppala, MD, pulmonologist on the medical staff at Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital.

According to the National Institutes of Health, at least 40 million Americans suffer from some type of long-term sleep disorder, and an additional 20 million experience occasional sleeping problems. Sleep disorders can interfere with work, cause serious medical problems, impede driving ability and disrupt social activities. Sleep problems can range from snoring and insomnia, to apnea and sleepwalking. The effects of a poor night’s sleep include daytime grogginess that may be accompanied by unpredictable periods of dozing off, irritability, anxiety, depression, forgetfulness and the inability to concentrate.
