Hospital Volunteers Celebrate Silver Anniversary
Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital

Volunteers Myrna Wansik, Phyllis Dominik and Pauline Bankston were there when the doors to Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital opened on May 16, 1983. Twenty-five years later they are still welcoming patients, working in various departments, and providing the warmth and support that has helped make the hospital the healthcare provider of choice for the Cypress Fairbanks community.

Back in the early 1980s Pauline watched with interest as the hospital was being built. Even before it opened she called and left a message saying she wanted to help. Today, Pauline fondly recalls those early days of volunteering at the hospital. “We had such teamwork among the volunteers and we still have that now,” she says. “I have made so many friends over the years. Even if they move away, we still keep in touch.”

Like Pauline, Myrna has made many friends at the hospital too. She also enjoys the camaraderie of working with people and the happiness she believes comes from helping others. “I wanted to do something significant with my time while my daughters were in school,” explains Myrna. “The years have gone by quickly because I have come in contact with so many nice people.”

Phyllis echoes those sentiments. “I just really enjoy being around people and helping them,” she says. “It’s a remarkable feeling to be able to give of your time and help others.” Phyllis began working as a volunteer with general surgery patients and then worked in the nursery for nearly 10 years. Today, while she may not come to the hospital on a regular basis, she still helps out by making baby caps for the more than 2,100 babies born at the hospital annually.

Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital is very fortunate to have a team of dedicated volunteers to help meet the healthcare needs of the community. The volunteer program now has nearly 120 men and women who work in many different areas of the hospital, including the emergency room, nursery, gift shop, information desk and nursing units. Volunteers have the opportunity to learn new skills, strengthen old ones or explore a career in health care.
