The Sleep Medicine Center at Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital is proud to announce the availability of sleep studies, or polysomnograms, for pediatric patients ages 11 and older.

Cypress Fairbanks Sleep Medicine Center features four private bedroom suites offering diagnosis and treatment of a broad range of sleep/wake disorders under the supervision of sleep specialists for both children and adults. The facility was designed around patient care and comfort, and each suite is decorated to offer a relaxing atmosphere for the patient.

Kids need their sleep. Studies have linked sleep to the ability to learn, create memories and solve problems. Inadequate sleep and excessive sleepiness can have a negative effect on a child’s overall health, school performance and behavior. The amount of sleep a person needs depends on the individual, but school-age children and teenagers typically need at least nine hours of sleep each night.

Some of the most common sleep disorders to affect children are insomnia, snoring, sleep apnea, sleepwalking and restless legs syndrome. Children who snore frequently or have sleep disorders are almost twice as likely to suffer from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Approximately 10 to 12% of children snore according to the National Sleep Foundation, and of those, some suffer from sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is among the most serious sleep disorders as it is characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep caused by blocked airway passages, resulting in repeated arousals from sleep. Sleep apnea has been associated with daytime sleepiness, academic problems and hyperactivity in children.

If you suspect that your child has a sleep disorder, Cypress Fairbanks Sleep Medicine Center recommends you consult with your child’s primary care provider and share your concerns. Based on an initial evaluation, your child’s physician may suggest an overnight sleep study that may help make a proper diagnosis and determine the severity of the problem.
