2010 Flu Shots are Available for Anyone Age Over the Age of 9 and the cost is $20

The press release information below reflects the 2008 flu vaccine and NOT the 2010 flu vaccine:

Cypress Fairbanks Urgent Care Center will offer flu shots during the month of October or while supplies of the vaccine last beginning October 1st. The Center is located at 9110 Barker Cypress (at West Road across from Lone Star College – Cy-Fair) and will be open from noon to 9 p.m. daily. Shots are available to everyone 18 years of age and older.

Each year 5 to 20 percent of Americans get the flu. The onset of flu symptoms usually occurs quickly and may include body aches, chills, cough, fever, headache, and sore throat. The flu can cause serious complications for the elderly and people with chronic medical conditions.

“Some people may experience side effects from a vaccination, but a flu shot does not cause the flu,” says Erin Isbell, manager at Cypress Fairbanks Urgent Care Center. “An annual vaccination is recommended because strains of flu virus change from year to year. If you want to stay healthy this fall and winter season, wash your hands regularly, stay away from people who are ill, avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth, and get your flu shot.”

The best time to get vaccinated is October or November because infection-fighting antibodies that provide protection against the flu generally take about two weeks to develop in the body. While the vaccination does not offer complete protection against illness, those who do get the flu after being vaccinated are at less risk of developing flu-related complications such as pneumonia, heart attack or stroke.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention strongly recommends that certain groups of people get vaccinated, including pregnant women, people 50 years or age or older, people of any age with certain chronic medical conditions, and health care or child care workers. The vaccine should not be given to people who currently have a fever, had a previous allergic reaction to a vaccine, developed Guillain-Barré syndrome, or are allergic to chicken eggs.

Cypress Fairbanks Urgent Care Center recommends that children between the ages of six months and five years old visit their family physician or pediatrician to discuss influenza and to receive a flu vaccination.
