Virtual Colonoscopy

A procedure referred to as "virtual colonoscopy" is available at Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital. During a virtual colonoscopy a computed tomography (CT) scanner takes multiple images of the abdomen and pelvis. Unlike a conventional colonoscopy, a virtual colonoscopy procedure is considered less invasive.

The procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes and requires no sedation. Because it does not require sedation, patients may find it easier to return to their daily activities and go home after the procedure without the aid of another person.

A conventional colonoscopy procedure usually takes 30-60 minutes. This procedure is invasive and utilizes a scope. Most patients are given pain medication and a sedative for comfort and relaxation. A conventional colonoscopy is recommended for the evaluation of changes in bowel habits, unexplained diarrhea, constipation or abdominal pain, blood in stools, colon polyps, cancer or unexplained anemia or a family history of cancer.

Some people avoid these screenings because they are embarrassed or afraid of invasive tests. The use of virtual colonoscopy can help ease these fears and increase early detection.

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in the United States today, but it may be prevented if detected early. Click here for more information about colon cancer.
